Continental method---so easy!

OK, so I've been afraid of trying the Continental method, because even on Knitty Gritty (great show on DIY Network with the ever-so-sexy Vickie Howell) it looks a little confusing...

But I just watched the video on www.knittinghelp.com/knittin...knit.php and it's so friggin' easy I can't believe it!

Check it out!

P.s. I taught Fiona (my 5-year old) how to knit last week, using a couple of pencils as needles! She picked it up so quickly I couldn't believe it, and is now knitting herself a scarf! But I think I'll switch her over to the Continental method, because she's left-handed and because it's so much easier to not screw up! :)

I am laughing at myself right now! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

    Easy? Aye, right!

OK, so it LOOKS easy, but you know... when you've been knitting for a couple of years with the yarn in one hand, it's pretty friggin' hard to switch hands! I'm having a whale of a time trying to get the tension right...

But I'm going to keep practicing, because I still think it's pretty cool.

    :)

Have any of you tried it?

That's the only way I know how to knit! I taught myself how a little over a year ago and I can't get how people can do it the other way!

Me too - I tried it both ways when I was learning and Continental just felt right. I love it! I'm amazed when I see people doing it with their Right hand. I'm also amazed when I see people knitting with the needles free floating, not pinned under arm or between the legs (which I do, so ladylike, I know). How do they keep them steady?

I would be one of those people! I couldn't imagine having to pin the needles down like that! Seems like it would make knitting take forrrrrrever!

I don't pin my needles down either!

I love how knitting is such an individual craft... and that no one rule works for all knitters!

I just started using circular needles for otherwise-straight-needle knitting, and it's SOOOO much easier! Especially if you're working on a bigger project--because you don't have to support the weight of the yarn with your hands/wrists--they just hang nicely on the circle, in your lap! I'm even knitting a scarf on them now. When I picked up straight needles for another scarf I'm knitting, they felt so big and clunky compared to the circulars!

I haven't tackled circulars yet. I've been skeered! Hobby Lobby had all knitting implements on 1/2 price a couple of weeks ago, so I bought some of the Boye interchangable circulars. Kinda cool to be able to pop the cable out and switch to a different length, needle size, etc. But still haven't found anything to knit on them yet. Any suggestions?!

I was home sick today so I spent that time getting a guitar strap ready to block and then making a ton of funky wrist bands.

I'm thinking circulars would have made the prayer shawl that I'm making a lot easier to deal with. I'm about 2/3 of the way done and it's very hard to handle. It seems like I've been knitting it forever - and probably have been for at least 6 or 7 months - and the heavier it gets, the less I want to deal with. Plus even tho it's just barely March, it's already getting hot in Texas (it was 98 last week!).

Yes, circulars would be great with a big ol' prayer shawl! You can switch to them anytime... just start knitting onto the circulars, and by your 2nd row you'll be on the circulars and you'll be like, "What the F was I skeered of?" :) I felt that way when I started knitting a scarf on them! They just freaked me out until I knit my 1st row, and I was all, "Oh!"

                :)
